Fifteenth century Venice is a safe haven for the masterless dregs of the vampire world, a city where they can live without the fear of retribution for violating another's territory. Still, there are plenty of ways for a young vampire to die in the glittering city, a lesson that prince turned pauper Mircea Basarab must learn quickly. But there are opportunities, too--in the service of a secretive courtesan, in the bed of a beautiful senator, and in the hunt for an ancient assassin.
As a vendetta older than Venice itself comes to a climax, Mircea struggles to evade the dangers of his current life, to come to terms with his past, and to uncover the truth hidden behind a city of masks...
Masks eBook Karen Chance
I quite enjoyed this novel about Mircea Basarab. This book connects with both of Karen Chance's longer series, the Cassandra/Cassie Palmer books & the Dorina/Dori Basarab series. Mircea is a character that occurs frequently & features prominently in both aforementioned series. This story takes place in Venice, a couple of years after Mircea was Changed & became a vampire. It gives the reader insight as to how he became the character that he currently is. I really enjoyed this look into his past. I may be wrong, but I do not recall this series of events ever being mentioned in either of Karen Chance's other two series. So, it was great to read a brand new story.
Basically, Mircea is trying to get his bearings. He has left his home & the love of his life. He has been turned into a vampire & is now situated in Venice, Italy. He becomes involved with a brothel & a highly placed senator of the European Vampire Consul. To day any more would be to give away too much about what ensues in this book, but it was a fun read & definitely recommended for anyone that has been introduced to Mircea Basarab in Chance's other nook series.

Masks eBook Karen Chance Reviews
It was very interesting to learn about the character of Mircea's first few years as a vampire. I loved the other characters as well and hope to eventually read about where they are now in a future book. Mircea is such an intelligent, courageous, mysterious, and interesting character in the Cassie Palmer series and after reading this book I'm d v England more disappointed in the fact he was pretty much missing in action in the last book of that series. I mean, I like Pritkin, but I really really love Mircea. Oh well... This book has a great storyline and plots. Twists, turns, and surprises. Very intense and heartstopping at times. You will love the interaction with the characters. Very well written and will cause lots of chuckles along with every other emotion you possess. Loved it.
Masks is set in Venice, when Mircea is young, poor, alone and recently changed. This was, to me, a sometimes dark story of survival when one has lost everything, is an an easy victim in a violent world. a world where he has not yet figured out if survival after the losses is going to be more than endless drudgery and sorrow. Mircea is one of my favorite characters-Dory being the favorite and reading about his beginnings in Venice was uncomfortable. He knew was not yet the powerful leader but I had expected the Mircea of dory's childhood. This is years earlier. The story covers not a growth of the powers he has in later stories, rather it examines his personal growth, his self discovery of who he is and will always be no matter human or vampire, slave or senator.
Read this as pure adventure fantasy, as a tale of endings that turn to beginnings, as a fantastical spin on historical Venice..worth reading any way you like.
This is one of the books I have been waiting for since starting to read the first books of Karen Chance. The story of how a young prince , Mircea Basarab , just become vampire , manages to survive . Not very easily , it seems . From prince he becomes maimed exile , recovers from the grave and then flees to Venice where he is thrown in prison with some starved vampires ; To his chagrin he is sold as a slave to a female and very powerful vampire . She runs an escort house and the self-assured prince sees himself as landing in the gutter . However , he rather quickly learns some useful lessons and becomes a leader to his fellow slaves . Great events happen very quickly and senator Cleopatra challenges the mad Consul for his title and life . With some help from unexpected places , she wins the awesome fight . Mircea Basarab travels back home , finds he has a small daughter and brings her back to Venice . This book ties in some loose ends from the other books and gives some small insight in the character of Mircea when he was not jet a senator himself . All in all , it is a rewarding and great read .
So obviously if you have ever read any of Karen Chance's books before, you'd come to Masks with pretty high expectations and honestly, I think she delivered. Masks focus' on Mircea's life shortly after his transition when he was living in Venice. It was a great look at what ultimately shaped him into the man he is in the Cassie Palmer books and it was a great peak at what makes him tick. Masks is not quit as action packed as the Cassie books are, I wasn't really left with any of the 'edge of my seat' feelings but it was still a fun ride.
The ending definitely had me itching for more...the book is 406 pages long and I didn't want it to end. I'm now wondering if the photo album that Cassie finds in Curse the Dawn in Mircea's room is filled with images of who Mircea connects with at the very end of Masks? It would answer a lot of questions but at the same time, creates so many more. Where is this person now? Why haven't we seen them in the Cassie books yet? It's driving me crazy but in a good way. I cannot wait to see what Karen has in store for us next and I'm 100% on board for another Mircea book! I'd love to see his fight to power and how he gained his seat on the senate in the future! I'd also like to see what maybe happens to come of the side characters from Masks.
I've read this several times since purchasing it. Mircea Basarab, the main character of this novel, is also a prominent supporting character in Chance's other series. He's always been an intriguing, mysterious figure, but ultimately suave and cool, and a little bit distant. This complicates his image, and gives the reader into a lot of insight into why and how Mircea develops into that character. I'd love to read more of these, actually. While this can be a supplement to Chance's other series, it also is well-written enough to stand on its own. Prior knowledge of characters is not necessary.
